A couple from Lancashire have won a £61 million share of the EuroMillions jackpot, but initially thought they had only won £2.60. Richard and Debbie Nuttall, both 54, from Colne, scooped £61,708,231 in the draw on 30 January, which had a total jackpot of £123 million.
The couple were on holiday in Fuerteventura celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary when they discovered their win. Mr Nuttall, an accountant, said he saw an email from the National Lottery about 'exciting news' and checked his account, seeing the balance had gone up by £2.60. He told his wife, who suggested they could have a bacon butty with the money. They went out for the day, enjoying the scenery.
Later, Mr Nuttall received another email and logged in again, this time seeing a much larger sum. He initially thought it was a scam or a glitch. After confirming the win with the National Lottery, the couple celebrated wildly in their car. 'By this time me and Debs are going mental... jumping up and down in our car seats, punching the air, thumping the dashboard,' he said.
The couple plan to enjoy their wealth, with Mr Nuttall looking forward to playing golf at top courses, and Mrs Nuttall, an office administrator, dreaming of a holiday in Barbados. So far, she has bought new bedding and an expensive hairdryer, while he has purchased golf clubs and a bag. They intend to share the money with family and friends and support the charity BK's Heroes, which was founded by Mrs Nuttall's late cousin Ben King and raises awareness of brain cancer and kidney disease.
Mr Nuttall said they would remain the same people despite the win. 'We will have nicer things and do nicer things but we will still be the same people and have our friends and family around us,' he added. The other winning ticket for the jackpot was bought in Spain.
