Pokemon Card Frenzy Erupts at London's Flagship Sports Direct Store

A mob of enthusiastic Pokemon fans forced open the shutters of the flagship Sports Direct store in central London, storming inside in a chaotic rush for new and valuable trading cards. The incident occurred on Oxford Street, where circulating footage captured a crowd of youths and individuals of varying ages surrounding the shop and pushing their way in as it was opening.

Early Morning Chaos and Store Damage

The fans began filtering into the store at approximately 9:30 am today, a mere half-hour before the scheduled opening time. Witnesses reported that the crowd proceeded to rampage through the store, dodging racks of clothing and kicking shoes onto the floor in their haste to reach the GAME store located at the back of the premises.

One super fan was seen so enthralled by the prospect of securing the cards that he bypassed his crutches, which he had previously appeared reliant upon, and sprinted to the back of the shop. The force of the crowd caused significant damage, including the dislodging of the 'A' from the GAME branding inside the entrance, along with other signs of disruption.

Police Response and Limited Supply Spark Frenzy

Police were observed standing outside the store as fans ducked under the shutters, which were stuck about a metre from the ground. The mob-like behaviour was sparked by the restock of a line of Pokemon trading cards named Mega Evolution - Ascended Heroes, with complete sets reportedly selling for around £4,500.

The new gaming collectibles were launched today in a select few Sports Direct stores, including the Oxford Street location, which houses GAME stores after Sports Direct acquired the gaming franchise GAME Digital for £51.9 million in 2019. The stores were supplied with a limited quantity of cards, generating significant hype around the launch.

Broader Context of Pokemon's Popularity

Despite the gaming craze, the chaos also attracted non-Pokemon fans, with one person commenting in a video: 'This is wild. I ain't trying to get no Pokemon.' The Pokemon Trading Card Game, known as Pokemon TCG, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and remains a driving force behind the success of the Pokemon franchise.

Reportedly the world's highest-grossing media franchise, trading cards continue to soar in popularity, collected by both children and adults. According to a report by Research and Markets, the industry was valued at $7.8 billion (£5.8 billion) last year. Pokemon, a globally recognised name encompassing games, television, and cards, has grown in global influence since its creation and launch in 1996.

The Daily Mail has contacted Sports Direct for comment regarding the incident.
