Manchester United will have to part with a portion of the money earned from Mason Greenwood's transfer from Marseille to Fenerbahce, as a sell-on clause triggers payments to Getafe. United included a 40% sell-on clause when Greenwood moved to Marseille for £26.6 million in 2024. Marseille have now sold the forward to Turkish side Fenerbahce for a reported £33.3 million, meaning United are set to receive around £13.3 million from the sale.
Getafe's Share of the Sell-On Fee
However, United will not pocket the entire amount. According to The Athletic, 20% of United's share will go to Getafe following Greenwood's loan stint with the Spanish club during the 2023/24 season. Consequently, £2.7 million will be forwarded to Getafe, leaving United with roughly £10.5 million from the sell-on arrangement. The clause was established as part of Greenwood's move to Getafe after his arrest for attempted rape, assault, and controlling behaviour in January 2022. The case was subsequently dropped, with Greenwood denying all allegations.
Greenwood's Performance and Impact
The 24-year-old delivered impressive displays for both Getafe and Marseille. During his loan period in Spain, he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 36 appearances. That prompted Marseille to make their move the following summer. Across the past two seasons, Greenwood has found the net 48 times and laid on 17 assists in 81 outings across all competitions. Given that Greenwood came through the academy at Old Trafford, both the initial sum received by United and the funds from the sell-on clause will count as pure profit under the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Financial Boost for Manchester United
The £10.5 million net gain represents another welcome boost for manager Michael Carrick in the transfer window, as United prepare for Champions League football next season. The club have recently completed deals for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined £85 million. Greenwood earned glowing praise from former Marseille and current Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, who said: "I see him every day, he has huge potential. I don't see any other players in Europe at the same level. He has the potential to win the Ballon d'Or. It will be up to him to decide whether he wants to do everything he can to fight for it or not."
