Manchester United have no intention of making a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, despite reports from Argentina on Monday night suggesting a bid was imminent. Sources at Old Trafford have refuted the claims, stating that Romero is not part of the club's summer transfer plans.
Romero not a target for United
The 28-year-old Argentine centre-back has been linked with a surprise switch to Manchester United, but club insiders have dismissed the speculation as inaccurate. Romero has captained Tottenham in the last two seasons, both of which ended in 17th-place finishes in the Premier League. Spurs narrowly avoided relegation this term under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Romero missed the end of the campaign due to a knee injury. He returned to Argentina but was forced back to England to watch Tottenham's final match after facing backlash from fans. The defender has a history of disciplinary issues, having been sent off six times for Spurs, including a straight red card against United at Old Trafford in February.
United's transfer priorities
Manchester United are focusing on other areas of the squad this summer. The midfield is set for a major overhaul, with a deal already agreed to sign Ederson from Atalanta. The left-back position is also under review, with Newcastle's Lewis Hall admired but considered a difficult target due to his contract and manager Eddie Howe's desire to keep him.
Regarding centre-backs, manager Michael Carrick currently has five senior options: Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, and Ayden Heaven. Maguire and Martinez are the first-choice partnership, though both have faced suspensions and injuries this season. Maguire served a two-match ban after a red card against Bournemouth in March, while Martinez missed time with a calf injury and was suspended for three matches after pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin's ponytail in a match against Leeds.
With sufficient depth in defence, United are unlikely to pursue a centre-back this window, making the Romero link highly improbable.
