Gateshead Council is recruiting at least £1m-a-year worth of senior management positions, including a head of transport and an anti-social behaviour manager, following an internal reorganisation. The new roles collectively cost between £996,000 and £1.1m annually, but the council says the changes will save around £500,000.
Reorganisation Details and Savings
Chief executive Dale Owens stated: “We have recently reorganised our senior management structure to better align responsibilities and strengthen leadership across the council. This has resulted in a number of new roles being created, alongside some changes to existing posts. The new structure is also expected to deliver savings of around £500,000.”
The council’s lowest salary is £24,769, while the chief executive earns £185,000 until April 2027. Recent government figures on the gender pay gap show women are paid 93p for every £1 earned by men in median hourly wages. Women constitute 59.7% of the highest-paid quarter of the workforce but also 65.5% of the lowest-paid quarter.
Financial Context
In January 2026, Gateshead Council began internal consultations with employees and trade unions after revealing a 2026-27 funding gap of £20.5m in its medium-term financial plan. The local authority planned to bridge the gap using £4m from reserves, implementing £5.9m in social care interventions, and making £10.6m in cuts and efficiencies.
