Drone photos show £20m Southport Pier restoration progress

Stunning drone pictures have revealed the scale of the £20m restoration project taking shape at Southport Pier. The aerial images, captured by Jason Williams of UK Drone Shots, offer a striking view of the Grade II-listed landmark as major restoration work continues.

The pier has been closed since December 2022 over concerns about its condition. Led by Sefton Council, the restoration is being carried out by contractor AE Yates and is now “continuing at pace”.

Work carried out so far

Recent work has included removing 27 lighting arches, the kiosk and halfway house, as well as decking, handrails, tramlines and electrical services. Scaffolding has also been installed and preparations made for new British-bought steelwork.

Jason Williams said the aerial images offer a rare glimpse of the 3,600ft historic structure during a major moment in its history.

Future of the pier

Once complete, the scaffolding and machinery will be gone and visitors will once again be able to walk along one of Southport’s most recognisable landmarks.
