Coffee Chain Breaks Silence on Nottingham Woman's 'Quadrillionaire' Status
200 Degrees Coffee has officially addressed the incident that made a Nottingham business owner the "richest woman in the world on paper" due to a startling receipt error. Sophie Downing, a 29-year-old from Nottingham, gained international attention last week when a receipt from the coffee chain displayed her remaining balance as over £63 quadrillion.
The Moment That Sparked Global Headlines
Sophie Downing, who runs the Secret Sugar Club hair removal service, used a £10 gift voucher at a 200 Degrees Coffee store in Flying Horse Walk on February 12. The voucher was a Christmas present intended for a simple matcha latte purchase. However, the receipt she received showed a balance of 63 followed by 15 zeros—equivalent to a thousand trillion pounds.
This astronomical figure made her theoretically 100,000 times wealthier than Elon Musk, though with the significant caveat that the funds could only be spent on coffees and croissants at the chain. Sophie used the gift card again on February 17, finding the balance still in the tens of quadrillions, further amplifying the bizarre situation.
Company Confirms Technical Administrative Error
In a statement to the BBC, 200 Degrees Coffee clarified that the receipt was the result of a "technical administrative error." A spokesperson explained that the gift card number was mistakenly entered into the wrong part of the till instead of the actual gift card value.
"As a result, the customer was generated a receipt which suggested they had a rather higher amount of money left on their gift card than they actually did," the spokesperson said. "The customer was only charged exactly what they should have been, and after they had completed their purchase, their gift card had exactly the right amount left on it."
The company noted that the barista gave Sophie the incorrect receipt as a souvenir, followed by a correct receipt showing the true gift card value. This error effectively created the world's first-ever quadrillionaire on paper, albeit temporarily.
Sophie Downing's Reaction to the Unprecedented Error
Sophie told the BBC last week that she found the situation "really funny" and had "never seen anything like that before." She quipped, "I’m just enjoying being the richest woman in the world on paper while it lasts."
Despite the humorous aspect, Sophie admitted she would have preferred a £63 quadrillion gift card to spend at the supermarket rather than being limited to coffee shop purchases. The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media and news outlets, highlighting how simple technical glitches can lead to extraordinary scenarios.
200 Degrees Coffee has assured customers that such errors are rare and that proper procedures are in place to prevent similar occurrences. The chain emphasized that all transactions were processed correctly, with only the receipt display being affected.
