A survey of 2,000 British adults reveals that 64% enjoy eating foods typically viewed as American, citing their 'comfort' appeal, ease, and convenience. The research, commissioned by the English Cheesecake Company, highlights a growing love for indulgent US-style dishes, from peanut butter and jam to chicken and waffles.
Top American Flavour Combinations in the UK
Salted caramel emerged as the UK's favourite flavour combination adopted from across the pond, with cookies and cream a close second. Other popular pairings include bacon with maple syrup, bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon, and peanut butter with chocolate. Nearly one in five (19%) enjoy New York style cheesecakes, while 18% appreciate bold flavours and 15% favour large portion sizes.
Frequency and Generational Appeal
Nearly three in ten (28%) Brits consume American dishes at least once a week, with 17% saying they eat more during the World Cup. Gen Z is the biggest appreciator, with 18% naming American-style food as their favourite, compared to 11% of all adults. The poll also found that 34% of Brits have been influenced by American TV, films, or social media in their eating habits.
Social and Convenience Factors
Almost half (45%) of respondents said American-inspired foods are great for guests because they feed larger numbers, are easy to prepare, and keep things fun and casual. A third enjoy combining American dishes with British favourites, such as mac 'n' cheese with a Sunday roast or cheesecake after a curry.
Future Trends and Marketing
Thirty percent of Brits think American-inspired food trends will increase in the UK in the next few years. The English Cheesecake Company, which commissioned the research, is launching Hershey's cookies and cream and Reese's flavoured cheesecakes. A spokesperson said: 'American-inspired dishes are showing no signs of going away. The US does comfort food so well, it’s no wonder it’s here to stay in the UK.' The company will hand out free cheesecakes on 2nd July at London Liverpool Street station and 3rd July at Manchester Piccadilly station.
