Arsenal will have to pay in the region of £100 million to sign Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes this summer, according to a report in the Telegraph. The Gunners had been led to believe, via intermediaries, that the Brazil international could be available for half that price if Newcastle failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Initial Talks and Player Interest
Standard Sport reported in June that Arsenal had held initial talks with Guimaraes’ representatives to gauge his availability, and those discussions proved positive. The 28-year-old has since reportedly informed Newcastle of his wish to leave St James’ Park and join the Premier League champions. French publication L’Equipe has claimed Guimaraes has agreed personal terms with Arsenal on a contract running until 2031.
Newcastle's Stance and Price Tag
Despite Arsenal's encouragement, Newcastle's hierarchy has made it clear they would demand a fee similar to the £100 million Tottenham paid for Sandro Tonali earlier this month. The Magpies have maintained that Guimaraes is not for sale at any price, having already recouped a combined £162 million (potentially rising to £170 million) from the sales of Anthony Gordon and Tonali this summer.
Contract Situation
Guimaraes has two years left on his current contract, with Newcastle holding an option to extend by a further 12 months, effectively tying him down until 2030. This leverage strengthens Newcastle's negotiating position.
Arsenal's Dilemma
Arsenal now face a decision: whether to pay nearly double their initial expectation for Guimaraes or walk away from their top transfer target. The Gunners are expected to begin club-to-club talks with an official offer, but the £100 million price tag may prove prohibitive.
