Authorities have identified the 16 people killed in a devastating explosion at a rural Tennessee explosives plant on 10 October. The blast occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems, a supplier of military explosives, in Humphreys County.
Among the victims was Trent Stewart, pastor of Log Church in Waverly. His fiancée, Katy Stover, described him as her 'best friend, soulmate, and my person'. The church cancelled Sunday services and held a prayer gathering instead, which drew a packed congregation.
Another victim, Reyna Gillahan, was remembered by her daughter Rosalina as 'a beautiful soul – loving, strong, and always thinking of others'. Fundraisers have been set up for affected families.
The explosion was felt over 20 miles away, leaving a smouldering wreck. Authorities confirmed no survivors. The investigation is ongoing, with evidence scattered over miles. 'It’s almost like putting a puzzle back together,' said Matthew Belew of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The plant, located about 60 miles south-west of Nashville, employs 115 people. Entry-level jobs pay $19–$21 per hour, higher than similar roles in the area.
