In a significant move for the British automotive sector, Mitsubishi Motors has announced its return to the UK market, setting its sights on the growing competition from Chinese manufacturers.
A Strategic Comeback
The Japanese brand, renowned for rugged vehicles like the Mitsubishi Shogun 4x4 and the L200 pickup, is scheduled to reappear in UK showrooms by summer 2026. This marks the company's first presence in the country since its departure in 2021.
A new range of 4x4s is planned for the launch, with plug-in hybrid technology expected to feature prominently. This is a strategic nod to one of Mitsubishi's past successes; the original Outlander was among the very first plug-in hybrid models available to British buyers.
Building on an Established Foundation
Mitsubishi's re-entry is facilitated by a ready-made operational network. When the manufacturer left three years ago, the aftersales division was sold to International Motors. This company, which also handles Subaru, Isuzu, GWM, and Xpeng in the UK, provides an existing framework of dealers and support services.
This established infrastructure means Mitsubishi can hit the ground running upon its return, avoiding the delays typically associated with building a distribution network from scratch.
Which Models Can UK Drivers Expect?
While the final model lineup for the UK is yet to be officially confirmed, several right-hand drive vehicles currently sold in Australia are strong contenders. Potential models include:
- The new Outlander plug-in hybrid
- The Eclipse Cross plug-in hybrid
- The new ASX hatchback
- The Pajero Sport (sold as the Shogun in the UK)
- The current Triton pick-up truck
Sharon Townsend, head of Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, expressed delight at the brand's reintroduction. She stated, "We're delighted to be introducing exciting new Mitsubishi vehicles to our loyal UK customers. Over the past few years, we've continued to see enthusiasm for the brand, which has strongly influenced this decision."
Frank Krol, President & CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Europe, added, "Our upcoming models represent the very best of Mitsubishi Motors' core technologies in performance, four-wheel drive, and much more. We look forward to a successful introduction in the UK – a market where our brand continues to have a deep emotional connection with loyal customers."
This calculated return positions Mitsubishi to directly take on Chinese car makers who are increasingly looking to establish a foothold in the European electric and hybrid vehicle market, setting the stage for intensified competition from summer 2026.
