Manchester United have confirmed the proposed location for a new 100,000-seater stadium, situated about 350 metres north-west of the existing Old Trafford ground. The announcement came as part of an ambitious masterplan for the 'sports-led' regeneration of the Trafford Wharfside area, published by Trafford Council.
Stadium District and Economic Impact
The new stadium will sit at the heart of a 'Stadium District' and is billed as the 'flagship landmark' of the wider Wharfside development. The masterplan includes new public transport links, enhanced rail connectivity, and extensive walking and cycling infrastructure. It aims to create a 'diverse neighbourhood' with 48,000 local jobs and 15,000 new homes across 150 hectares. United said the mixed-use development has the potential to offer a £7.3bn per annum boost to the UK economy.
Community and Consultation
Councillor Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council, said: "We want to create a great place to be, not just on matchdays but every day." United stated no decision has been made regarding the future of the existing Old Trafford stadium. A consultation process is now due to open.
