Honda has announced a recall of more than 400,000 vehicles in the United States due to a manufacturing defect that could cause wheels to detach. The recall affects certain Honda Civic models from the 2016 to 2021 model years.
The issue stems from a supplier error where steel lug seat inserts in aluminium accessory wheels may not have been properly installed. Honda stated that this could lead to the wheels loosening or falling off, increasing the risk of a crash.
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail early next month. They can take their cars to a Honda dealership for a free inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the wheels at no cost.
This recall comes amid a year of high recall numbers in the automotive industry, with 25.8 million vehicles recalled in the US as of November, according to federal data. Toyota also recently recalled over one million vehicles due to a software issue affecting rear-view cameras.
