Former Arsenal star Mathieu Flamini has detailed his remarkable journey from Premier League runner-up to billionaire entrepreneur. The 42-year-old Frenchman, who played 246 times for the Gunners across two spells, retired from football in 2019 and has since amassed a fortune estimated at £10 billion through his green chemistry company, GF Biochemicals.
From Football Pitch to Chemical Lab
Flamini, who narrowly missed out on Premier League titles in 2004/05 and 2015/16 with Arsenal, co-founded GF Biochemicals with Pasquale Granata shortly after leaving north London for AC Milan. The company produces levulinic acid, a molecule identified by the US Department of Energy as one of the 12 molecules of the future, derived from agricultural waste. This bio-based ingredient can replace petroleum derivatives in cosmetics, cleaning products, paints, and solvents, reducing environmental and health impacts.
A Natural Transition
In an interview with Harvard Business Review, Flamini explained: "Football was a childhood dream but the environment has always played an important role in my life. Growing up in the South of France, I've always felt close to nature and the sea. I developed an environmental awareness at a very early age." He credited his AC Milan teammates for inspiring his entrepreneurial spirit and noted that despite lacking a background in chemistry, he surrounded himself with specialists and educated himself over time.
Overcoming Challenges
Flamini has lodged more than 200 patent applications over the past decade and recently completed a leadership programme at Harvard Business School. He drew parallels between football and business: "What sets top-level athletes apart is that they love a challenge, pushing boundaries, and they know how to keep their cool. As a business leader, your role changes completely: you become a coach. The team comes first." He acknowledged the long-term nature of his investment, stating that while GF Biochemicals launched over 10 years ago, their first product only recently reached the market.
Flamini's success story underscores how skills from elite sport—resilience, determination, patience, and teamwork—can translate into groundbreaking entrepreneurship. His company aims to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable chemical industry, offering safer alternatives for everyday products.
