Sainsbury's has been crowned the winner in a ranking of supermarket picky bits selections, outperforming Aldi, Lidl, Asda, and Marks & Spencer. The assessment considered quality, variety, and value across five major UK retailers.
Lidl Falls Short on Variety
Lidl placed last due to its limited selection. While the supermarket offers competitive prices and friendly service, its compact store size restricts the range. Traditional items include a nine-pack of sausage rolls for £1.29, six cheese-and-onion rolls for £1.75, and four pork pies for £1.19. Classic dips or TexMex options are available for £2.49, and olives for £1.99. Unique products such as barbecue pork mini rolls (£1.99) and sweetcorn and jalapeño fritters (£1.99) were noted, but overall the aisles were described as unappealing and unwelcoming.
Aldi Offers Budget-Friendly Options
Aldi ranked fourth, praised for its low prices and slightly better variety than Lidl. Highlights include sweet chilli houmous (95p), a six-pack of mini pork and pickle pies (£1.89), and 10 mini chicken skewers (£1.59) in flavours like barbecue, sweet chilli, and peri peri. A 40-pack of cocktail sausages costs £1.99, and a Spanish or Italian meat-and-cheese selection is £1.89. However, the range is still limited compared to larger supermarkets, making it suitable for quick picnics but not party spreads.
Asda Impresses with Mix-and-Match Deals
Asda secured third place, surprising with a dedicated picky-bits section and strong deals. Mix-and-match offers include any two for £3.50 on items like 10 mini pork pies (£2.15) and 24 cocktail sausages (£2.15). A three-for-£7 deal covers olives, pies, dips, cheeses, and cured meats, with standout products such as pesto mozzarella pearls (£2.98), marinated olives with Greek feta (£2.98), and four vintage cheddar and shallot rolls (£2.50). Own-brand yellow packaging offers eight sausage rolls for 98p. However, the party food selection is scattered and lacks the quality and variety of M&S and Sainsbury's.
Marks & Spencer: King of Quality but Pricey
Marks & Spencer took second place, renowned for its distinctive items. Highlights include a fully loaded Mexican-style dip (£3.25), mini feta and cheese pot (£4), Turkish grilled pepperoncini (£4), and Korean-style sticky rice salad (£3). Traditional options include fresh colossal Greek-style olives (£4), a nine-pack of small sausage rolls (£2.75), and two classic scotch eggs (£1.75). In-store offers include three salads for £8, two for £6.50 on cured meats and cheese, and two for £2.50 on dips. Despite the enjoyable browsing experience, higher prices prevented a top ranking.
Sainsbury's Wins with Range and Dietary Options
Sainsbury's claimed the top spot, offering the best combination of deals, competitive pricing, and outstanding range. The party food selection spans two fully stocked aisles, with a notable breadth of vegan, vegetarian, kosher, and halal choices. Products include 14 Quorn Cocktail Sausages (£2.10), an Extra Mature Cheddar & Caramelised Onion Quiche (£4.50), and a Giant Cous Cous & Feta Salad (£3.25). Nectar cardholders can purchase any three Taste the Difference items for £8, such as Pesto & Parmesan Pasta (£3.25), Salami Riserva Dry Cured (£3.50), and King Prawns, Sunblush Tomatoes & Pesto (£4.50). Sainsbury's also price-matches Aldi on sausage rolls and offers discounted olives, pork pies, and dips for Nectar customers.
