A TikTok video has sparked widespread confusion over the meaning of 'MKT' on restaurant bills, with many diners discovering they have been paying more than expected. The clip, posted by user @aribella_menold, shows a receipt totaling $159.14 (£118) for three diners, with the text overlay: 'POV: You didn't know what 'MKT' meant on the steak menu and now you're paying for it.' The video has amassed over 2.2 million views.
What Does 'MKT' Mean on a Restaurant Bill?
Hospitality payment experts at Dojo have clarified that 'MKT' stands for 'market price,' indicating that the price of an item is not fixed and fluctuates based on current market rates. This is commonly seen on items like seafood, prime meat cuts, seasonal produce, and imported ingredients. Restaurants use 'MKT' to adjust pricing without reprinting menus.
The TikTok video ignited a debate over responsibility when 'MKT' pricing confuses customers. One commenter wrote: 'Honestly, shame on your server for not informing you of the price when it’s clearly not listed.' Another countered: 'I have never been anywhere where they told you the cost upfront unless you asked… it's totally the customer's fault for not asking when there is NO PRICE LISTED.' A third added: 'I looked up market value once and then asked the price. It was like double what Google told me.'
Who Is Responsible for Explaining 'MKT' Pricing?
Dojo advises that transparency from both sides is key. 'It's likely the server assumed the customer was familiar with the pricing or would ask if unsure,' they said. To avoid confusion, diners should feel comfortable asking for clarification on any 'MKT' priced items. Equally, servers should offer a prompt, such as: 'Just to note, I can provide today’s price for any items listed as MKT upon request.'
The revelation has left many foodies reconsidering their dining habits, with some vowing to always ask about market price items before ordering. The incident highlights the importance of clear communication between restaurants and customers to prevent bill shock.
