Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride has issued a stark warning to Labour leader Andy Burnham, urging him to stand with pensioners and rule out any weakening or scrapping of the state pension triple lock. Writing in the Express, Stride argued that the triple lock is essential for providing security and dignity to those who have worked hard all their lives.
Triple Lock Under Threat
Stride expressed alarm that advisors around Burnham, who is widely expected to become Britain's next Prime Minister, have suggested the triple lock should be abandoned. He described this as a dangerous direction that should set off alarm bells for households across the country. The triple lock ensures the state pension rises annually by the highest of inflation, average earnings growth, or 2.5%.
"The triple lock is not some Westminster gimmick. It is about providing security and dignity for people who worked hard all their lives," Stride wrote. He highlighted that pensioners cannot simply work extra shifts, seek promotions, or take on second jobs to cope with rising costs, making the pension a critical buffer between security and hardship.
Historical Context of Pensioner Poverty
Stride pointed to the record of the last Labour government, under which Britain had the fourth-highest level of pensioner poverty in Europe. He credited the triple lock, introduced and maintained by the Conservatives in government, with reversing that trend and ensuring pensioners received the protection they deserve.
"Yet now some of those around the soon-to-be Prime Minister seem willing to pull away that safety net," Stride warned. He emphasized that at a time of high energy bills, sharply rising food prices, and widespread cost-of-living concerns, debating the triple lock's affordability is exactly the wrong conversation.
Call for Commitment
Stride argued that the triple lock is not a luxury but a recognition that retirement should not mean falling behind year after year for those who have contributed to society through work and taxes. He concluded by stating the Conservative Party's clear position: they introduced, maintained, and continue to support the triple lock, and will fight for it in the future.
"Andy Burnham should stand with pensioners and rule out any attempt to weaken or scrap the triple lock," Stride said, directly challenging the Labour leader to commit to the policy.
