Met Office names 56 areas hit by heavy rain on Monday August 3

The Met Office has forecast a major change in UK weather, with heavy rain expected to hit a large part of the country on Monday, August 3. After a period of dry spells and sunshine, rainfall will spread from Scotland down to the South-east.

Rainfall to become widespread

The Met Office warns that showers could break out "more widely on Monday." Weather maps show rain sweeping in from the West, initially covering Scotland and northern England, and reaching parts of the South. The downpour is expected to last throughout the day, gradually spreading across the UK.

In the early hours, rain will target southern Scotland, northern England, the Midlands, and parts of the South, extending as far north as Glasgow and as far south as Devon. The South-east will remain mostly dry in the morning, except for Cambridge, Kent, and East Sussex, which show small blue patches on the map.

As the day progresses, rainfall becomes more widespread, especially across Scotland, including Aberdeen and the Highlands. By evening, the South will be dry, with rain settling in Scotland and northern England.

Long-range outlook

The Met Office's long-range forecasts indicate a "changeable period" leading up to August 3. For the period between August 4 and August 13, the forecast states: "A generally rather changeable period looks likely, with many places likely to see some much needed rain or showers at times but also some more sunshine. Initially, some heavy rain looks likely across the northeast, with some showers elsewhere."
