Ronnie O'Sullivan is set to return to The Crucible this week for the World Snooker Seniors Championship, and fellow professional Barry Hawkins has suggested the seven-time world champion is being paid handsomely for his appearance. Hawkins told 247Bet that O'Sullivan's participation is likely motivated by a significant appearance fee and his enduring love for the game.
Hawkins expressed surprise that O'Sullivan would take part in the Seniors event, given his focus on the main World Championship, where he recently reached the last 16. However, he noted that the Seniors tournament offers less pressure and a chance for O'Sullivan to enjoy himself after the gruelling 17-day Crucible schedule. Hawkins also highlighted that the Seniors table has larger pockets, which could level the playing field.
Despite O'Sullivan's past hints at retirement, Hawkins believes the 50-year-old is not considering stepping away. He pointed to O'Sullivan's dedicated practice in China and his intention to compete at a high level for the next few years. Hawkins also mentioned that O'Sullivan's move to Dubai for tax reasons may have limited his tournament appearances, but that situation could change after this year.
