Millions of pensioners across the UK are set to receive a vital financial boost this winter to help cover soaring energy costs. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the details for the Winter Fuel Payment for the 2024/25 season, a tax-free grant designed to ease the burden of heating bills.
Here is your complete guide to how much you could get, who is eligible, and the crucial dates for your diary.
How Much Will You Receive?
The amount you receive is not a flat rate; it depends on your personal circumstances and the age of others living in your household during the qualifying week. Payments range from £150 to £300.
For those living alone or with no one else who qualifies:
- Born between 24 September 1957 and 2 October 1957: £150
- Born on or before 24 September 1957: £300
For those living with someone else who also qualifies:
- If either of you receives certain benefits: £150 (if one qualifies) or £100 (if both qualify).
- If neither receives those benefits: £150
Who is Eligible for the Payment?
You qualify for a Winter Fuel Payment if you were born on or before 3 October 1957. You must have also lived in the UK for at least one day during the qualifying week of 16-22 September 2024.
Most eligible individuals receive the payment automatically if they:
- Receive the State Pension.
- Get another social security benefit (not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, or Child Benefit).
Key Dates and Payment Schedule
Mark this in your calendar: The vast majority of payments will be made automatically in November or December 2024. The DWP expects all payments to be completed by January 31, 2025.
You should receive a letter in October or November outlining the exact amount you will receive. The payment will appear in your bank statement with a reference that includes your National Insurance number.
What If You Don't Get Paid Automatically?
Some people need to make a claim. You will need to apply for Winter Fuel Payment if you meet the eligibility criteria but do not receive a State Pension or other qualifying benefits. This is also true if you live in Switzerland or a European Economic Area (EEA) country.
Applications for winter 2024/25 are not yet open, but the DWP will announce when the claims service is available.
Could Your Payment Be Affected?
Your payment may be reduced or you may be ineligible if you:
- Were in hospital for the entire qualifying week receiving free treatment.
- Need permission to enter the UK and did not have recourse to public funds.
- Were in prison for the entire qualifying week.
- Lived in a care home for the entire qualifying week and received certain benefits.
This support is separate from the Cold Weather Payment and the Warm Home Discount scheme, which have their own distinct rules.
