Ed Miliband Slams Government Over Sizewell C Nuclear Project Delays
Miliband slams gov't over Sizewell C delays

Labour's shadow energy secretary, Ed Miliband, has launched a scathing attack on the government over its handling of the Sizewell C nuclear power project, accusing ministers of failing to secure vital funding for the scheme.

The proposed £20bn plant in Suffolk, led by French energy giant EDF, has faced repeated delays amid uncertainty over financial backing. Miliband warned that the government's inaction risks undermining Britain's energy security and decarbonisation goals.

Critical delays threaten energy strategy

Speaking to The Independent, Miliband stated: "The government's dithering on Sizewell C is emblematic of their failure on energy policy. We're seeing the consequences of 14 years of Conservative short-termism in our energy infrastructure."

The project, which would power six million homes, has been awaiting a final investment decision since receiving government approval in 2022. Ministers had promised to find private investors to match public funding, but progress has stalled.

Local concerns and economic impact

Local residents and environmental groups in Suffolk have raised concerns about the plant's potential impact on the coastline and wildlife. However, supporters argue the project would create thousands of jobs and provide reliable low-carbon electricity.

An EDF spokesperson said: "We remain committed to Sizewell C and are working with government to finalise the investment framework. This project is crucial for Britain's energy future."

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero maintains that negotiations with potential investors are ongoing, but declined to provide a timeline for resolution.
