Energy supplier EDF is running its 'Sunday Saver' challenge throughout May, offering customers with smart meters the chance to earn up to 64 hours of free electricity. The scheme rewards households for shifting their electricity usage away from weekday peak hours (4pm to 7pm), with free power provided on Sundays.
Participants can earn between four and 16 hours of free electricity each Sunday, depending on how much they reduce usage during peak times. Since the challenge launched in 2024, customers have collectively earned over 22.5 million hours of free electricity, saving £7.2 million on bills. On average, 'Sunday Savers' receive 18 hours of free electricity per month.
Joe Souto, Director of Retail at EDF, said: 'Regardless of the weather, with Sunday Saver customers can earn free electricity every Sunday, and as we head into the warmer months, there’s still plenty of opportunities to save on bills. Sunday Saver makes it simple for customers to flex their electricity use during busy weekday evenings, save money on their bills, and be rewarded with free electricity.'
EDF also promotes its 'FreePhase' tariffs, which provide free electricity when there is excess renewable energy. Customers on FreePhase have benefited from 37 hours of free electricity in the last fortnight. To maximise savings, customers are encouraged to shift tasks such as laundry, dishwashing, and charging devices away from the 4-7pm window.
