A severe heatwave sweeping across large parts of Asia is driving energy demand to unprecedented levels, particularly for air conditioning, while the ongoing US-Israeli war against Iran simultaneously tightens global energy supplies, creating a potential crisis.
Record Electricity Demand in India
India has experienced record electricity demand, reaching 271 gigawatts for four consecutive days—a level that was projected as the full-year ceiling for 2026-27. Temperatures have hit 47 degrees Celsius in some states, with three months of summer still remaining. The surge is exacerbated by a broader electrification trend and a significant increase in air conditioner ownership, with 10 to 15 million new units added annually and projections of 130 to 150 million more over the next decade.
Impact of the Middle East Conflict
The conflict in the Middle East has severely impacted global energy markets. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, forcing countries like India to ration gas and rely more heavily on coal. This has created a perfect storm of soaring demand and constrained supply.
Experts warn that without faster progress in increasing renewable energy storage and improving air conditioning efficiency, the region risks blackouts and a deeper reliance on coal, further worsening the climate crisis. The situation underscores the urgent need for investments in sustainable energy infrastructure and demand-side management.
