492 Climbers Prepare to Scale Mount Everest This Month

Nearly 500 climbers are preparing to scale Mount Everest this month, despite a massive unstable ice block, soaring travel costs, and higher permit fees. About 492 climbers, accompanied by an equal number of Nepali guides, are expected to attempt the ascent during a brief window of favourable weather conditions.

Khumbu Icefall Delays

A huge and unstable serac, or ice block, in the treacherous Khumbu Icefall has stalled climbers for over two weeks, preventing progress up the mountain. The Khumbu Icefall is a constantly shifting glacier characterised by deep crevasses and large overhanging ice formations, making it one of the most perilous sections of the climb.

Shift in Climber Demographics

While the number of climbers from the United States and Europe has declined, there has been a notable rise in Asian climbers. All attempts this year are being made from the Nepal side, as China’s route remains closed. The increase in permit fees and overall costs has not deterred the determined mountaineers, many of whom have been waiting for weeks at base camp for conditions to improve.

The situation echoes the 2019 season when a traffic jam near the summit contributed to the deaths of two climbers. Authorities have urged caution, but the allure of summiting the world’s highest peak remains strong.
