200 Homes Without Power After Severe Gales Batter Scotland
200 Scottish homes without power after severe gales

Hundreds of households in Scotland faced a dark and difficult night as severe gales swept across the country, causing significant disruption to power supplies.

Widespread Disruption and Ongoing Recovery

The powerful storm, which hit overnight into Friday, 28th November 2025, left a trail of damage, primarily affecting the electricity network. The Isle of Mull was one of the worst-hit areas, with around 1,000 properties initially losing power mid-morning on Friday.

Engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) have been working tirelessly to restore connections. Their efforts have seen the number of affected homes on Mull drastically reduced to around ten properties. However, the picture across Scotland remains challenging.

Weather Warnings and National Impact

The severe conditions were forecasted, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for wind. This warning was in place for Orkney, Shetland, and western parts of the Highlands and Argyll and Bute until 11am on Friday.

Forecasters had warned the public to prepare for potential disruption, heavy showers, and hail, with gusts potentially reaching 75mph. A spokesperson for SSEN confirmed that the damage was a direct result of these forecasted high winds and lightning.

While the situation on Mull has greatly improved, the national tally of homes still awaiting reconnection stands at between 150 and 200.

Looking Forward

"We are reconnecting folk, and it is around the 200-mark across the country," an SSEN spokesperson stated, providing an update on the ongoing restoration work. The utility company continues to focus its resources on returning power to all remaining customers as quickly and safely as possible following this severe weather event.
