Universal Credit Boost: Thousands of Households to Receive Extra £470 Payment This Month
Universal Credit boost: £470 increase for households

Thousands of households across the UK are set to receive a welcome financial boost this month as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) implements its annual benefits uprating. Millions of Universal Credit claimants will see their payments rise by 6.7%, with some families gaining an extra £470.

Why Are Payments Increasing?

The increase, which came into effect on April 8, is part of the government’s annual adjustment to keep benefits in line with inflation. This year’s 6.7% rise is based on the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) from September 2023.

How Much More Will You Get?

The exact amount depends on your circumstances:

  • Single claimants under 25: Standard allowance rises from £292.11 to £311.68 per month.
  • Single claimants 25 or over: Payments increase from £368.74 to £393.45.
  • Joint claimants under 25: Monthly allowance goes up from £458.51 to £489.23.
  • Joint claimants where one or both are 25+: Increases from £578.82 to £617.60.

Those with children or disabilities will see additional increases in their payments.

When Will You See the Difference?

While the new rates took effect on April 8, the exact date you’ll receive the increased amount depends on your regular payment date. Most claimants will see the higher amount in their May payments.

Other Benefits Affected

The uprating also applies to other benefits including:

  1. Jobseeker’s Allowance
  2. Employment and Support Allowance
  3. Income Support
  4. Pension Credit

The State Pension also increased by 8.5% this month.

What This Means for Struggling Households

With the ongoing cost of living crisis, this increase comes as welcome relief for many families. However, charities warn that despite the rise, many households will still struggle to cover essential costs.

The government maintains that the increase demonstrates its commitment to supporting the most vulnerable during challenging economic times.
