Tottenham Hotspur could round off a dream transfer window by signing long-term target Cody Gakpo, wrapping up a deal for Omar Marmoush, and completing four other moves before the deadline.
The club has already spent more than £300m on four new signings this summer. Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali have transformed the team's spine, while the newest £85m arrival Savio is expected to excite supporters. Free-agent acquisitions Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have added depth.
Despite that spending, the 3-0 opening defeat to Brentford showed more is still needed for a team that has finished 17th two years in a row.
Marmoush deal close
Omar Marmoush is likely to follow Manchester City team-mate Savio to north London, with only finer details left to iron out. The Egyptian forward has been allowed to leave City this summer after his career there never gathered speed.
Marmoush is reportedly set to sign for Spurs on an initial loan deal with a £50m conditional purchase option. He offers the elite transitional pace, ability to play on the shoulder and positional versatility that manager Roberto De Zerbi wants in a striker.
Gakpo interest
Reported interest in Cody Gakpo has not been entirely well-received among Spurs fans. Some question whether a player Liverpool deem surplus to requirements should be playing for Tottenham, or find the attacker an unexciting recruit.
However, Gakpo is a player who wants a larger role, is in his prime and has proven Premier League pedigree. He scored 18 goals in all competitions when Liverpool won the title two seasons ago. His 2025/26 season was a drop-off, but that came after a busy summer for Liverpool.
Manchester City have reportedly joined the race for his signature, which is likely to cost upwards of £60m. Gakpo has already scored a top-flight goal this season in Liverpool's 2-2 opening clash against Newcastle.
Four exits to fund moves
To finance moves for Gakpo and Marmoush, there will have to be casualties. Richarlison should lead the leaving party, having cost an initial £50m when signed from Everton in 2022 but consistently disappointing as a leading striker.
Pape Matar Sarr is also out of favour in a congested midfield and can leave while he still holds value, with a £30m price tag claimed. There is a temptation to sanction sales of Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall, but they could be needed if the midfield suffers injuries.
The final two deals involve sending Mikey Moore and Dane Scarlett out on loan. Moore, who looked lively in pre-season before a sub-par Brentford outing, seems to need one more campaign away in a top league. Koln is the expected destination, having spent last season with Rangers. Scarlett, now 22, should be given one last chance for a groundbreaking loan spell.
