A taste test of cornflakes from seven major UK brands has crowned Tesco's own-brand cornflakes as the winner, beating Kellogg's on both price and flavour. The test, conducted by GA Senior Writer Parul Sharma, pitted Kellogg's against own-brand offerings from Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, and M&S.
Kellogg's: The Benchmark
Kellogg's cornflakes scored 4 out of 5, praised for their nostalgic flavour and crunch. They were the sweetest and lowest in calories at 378kcal per 100g. However, at £2 for a 250g box, they were the most expensive per gram.
Tesco: The Winner
Tesco's own-brand cornflakes scored 4 out of 5, with an edge for price. They were the second crunchiest and most reminiscent of Kellogg's in flavour. At 95p for 500g, they were the most affordable, offering a saving of £1.05 compared to Kellogg's for twice the quantity.
Morrisons: Joint Winner
Morrisons cornflakes also scored 4 out of 5, described as the crunchiest with a slightly bitter, darker flavour. At £1.90 for 500g, they were more economical than Kellogg's but pricier than Tesco.
Other Brands: Mixed Results
Waitrose cornflakes scored 3 out of 5, with a distinct flavour but less crunch. At £1 for 500g, they offered good value. Sainsbury's scored 2.5 out of 5, criticised for thinness and an artificial flavour. Asda scored 2 out of 5, deemed bland and lacking cornflake texture. M&S's one-ingredient cornflakes scored 1.5 out of 5, described as tasting like puffcorn and being too different from traditional cornflakes, costing £2.65 for 325g.
Verdict: Tesco Tops
The joint winners were Tesco and Morrisons, with Tesco edging ahead due to its lower price. The tester concluded they would happily swap Kellogg's for Tesco or Morrisons own-brand cornflakes, noting the significant cost savings and comparable quality.
