Scottish Pensioners to Receive Up to £316.70 Heating Payment
Scottish Pensioners Get Up to £316.70 Heating Payment

Nearly one million pensioners across Scotland are set to receive a one-off heating payment later this year worth up to £316.70. The Pension Age Winter Heating Payment, delivered by Social Security Scotland, has replaced Winter Fuel Payments for people over 66 living in Scotland.

Payment Amounts and Eligibility

The annual payment supports older households through the colder months. Pensioners can receive between £105.55 and £316.70, depending on age and household living arrangements. Most payments will be made automatically from November, so the vast majority of pensioners do not need to apply.

To qualify, individuals must have been born on or before June 27, 1960, and be living in Scotland during the qualifying week from Monday, September 21 to Sunday, September 27, 2026. The exact amount varies based on age, whether they live alone or with another eligible pensioner, and if they receive certain DWP benefits as part of a single or joint claim. Those in residential care may receive a different amount.

Winter 2026/27 Payment Rates

Payments will be deposited into bank accounts automatically from the end of November. The rates are as follows:

  • Pensioners in residential care: £105.55
  • Single pensioners aged 66 to 79: £211.15
  • Single pensioners aged 80 and over: £316.70
  • Pensioner couples aged 66 to 79: £105.55
  • Pensioner couples aged 80 and over: £158.35

Higher Earners and Opting Out

Pensioners with a taxable income above £35,000 will still receive the payment, but the money will later be recovered through the tax system, effectively cancelling the benefit. Those who do not want the payment can opt out by contacting Social Security Scotland on 0800 182 2222. Full details are available on mygov.scot.

An online eligibility checker is also available to help people confirm whether they qualify and how much they could receive.

Pension Age Winter Heating Payment is part of Scotland’s devolved benefits system, designed to provide direct support for higher heating costs during winter. Eligible households are advised to check their details are up to date and to be aware of their annual income, particularly those near or above the £35,000 threshold.
