Sainsbury's Launches AI-Focused Graduate Scheme for 50 Future Leaders
Sainsbury's launches AI graduate scheme for 50

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's has unveiled a major new graduate programme designed to equip the next generation of retail leaders with vital skills in artificial intelligence and digital technology.

The FutureMaker Programme: Bridging the Skills Gap

The FutureMaker programme will recruit nearly 50 graduates to work from the company's store support centre. The scheme is structured to last for two years and is explicitly focused on developing competencies that the retailer deems essential for its future growth.

Following extensive research into the long-term needs of the business, the curriculum will prioritise digital literacy, AI, and machine learning. The aim is to demystify these technologies, boost digital confidence among new hires, and promote their responsible application within the retail environment.

Beyond AI, graduates will also cultivate expertise in data and analytics, business decision-making, and managing change and transformation initiatives.

Pathways to Permanent Roles

Upon completing the two-year programme, participants will be well-positioned to apply for permanent positions across a wide range of departments within Sainsbury's. The company has highlighted numerous potential career paths, including:

  • Buying and merchandising
  • Commercial operations and supply chain
  • Digital retail and product innovation
  • Data science, analytics, and logistics
  • Food technology, property, and procurement

A Sainsbury's spokesperson emphasised the company's commitment, stating: "As a proud people-first business, our colleagues are at the heart of everything we do. We're committed to investing in early careers and have spent time identifying the skills our future leaders will need to help us build a sustainable retail talent pipeline."

Context: A Challenging Job Market and Strategic Shift

This initiative arrives during a particularly difficult period for UK graduates. Earlier this year, job search site Indeed reported that graduates were confronting the toughest job market in years, with advertised roles down by 33% compared to the previous year—a seven-year low.

By creating this focused pathway, Sainsbury's hopes to offer more accessible opportunities and directly address this skills gap. The launch follows the retailer's strategic partnership with Microsoft announced in 2024, which aimed to enhance customer and colleague experience through AI, including upskilling programmes.

However, the supermarket has clarified that the new graduate scheme is not specifically linked to the Microsoft partnership. It forms part of a broader business overhaul that has also seen significant investment in automation and AI.

This strategic shift has occurred alongside substantial workforce changes. Over the past two years, Sainsbury's has announced two major rounds of job cuts, eliminating 1,500 positions in February 2024 and a further 3,000 in January 2025. These moves were part of a plan to simplify operations and cut £1 billion in costs amid a challenging economic climate.

Applications for the FutureMaker graduate scheme open on Thursday, 9 January 2026.
