In a significant move that will reshape its British operations, global food titan Nestlé has confirmed sweeping job cuts affecting nearly 300 employees across key UK sites.
The Swiss conglomerate, responsible for household names including KitKat, Nescafé and Purina, revealed plans to eliminate 289 positions while simultaneously creating 187 new roles, resulting in a net reduction of 102 jobs.
Factory and Office Locations Hit Hardest
The restructuring will particularly impact Nestlé's York factory, famous for producing KitKat chocolate bars, and its Gatwick offices. These locations bear the brunt of the workforce reduction as the company seeks to streamline operations and adapt to changing market demands.
A Nestlé spokesperson described the decision as "difficult" but necessary for ensuring the company's long-term competitiveness in the UK market. The move forms part of a broader strategic review aimed at optimising operational efficiency across Nestlé's British footprint.
Union Response and Worker Support
Trade union representatives have expressed deep concern over the announcement, with Unite vowing to scrutinise the proposals thoroughly and challenge any compulsory redundancies.
"We will be examining these proposals in detail and will be fighting to ensure there are no compulsory redundancies and to preserve as many jobs as possible," a Unite official stated.
Nestlé has committed to providing comprehensive support for affected employees, including redundancy packages and assistance with transitioning to new opportunities both within and outside the company.
