Manchester United's hierarchy, led by INEOS, have green-lighted a midfield rebuild that could see Manuel Ugarte depart Old Trafford at a loss, while a rival's opening bid for one of their targets has been rejected.
INEOS Backs Midfield Overhaul
Manchester United are reportedly prepared to accept a financial loss on Manuel Ugarte as they seek to move him on this summer. The Uruguayan midfielder, signed for £42.3million from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, has failed to justify his fee, and the club is unlikely to recoup their investment.
It is understood that United's football leadership, INEOS, would require Ugarte to be sold for at least £25.38m to avoid a loss under profitability and sustainability regulations, given his contract runs until 2029. However, the 25-year-old's substantial salary could deter potential buyers and keep him at Old Trafford this summer.
Ugarte's Departure Could Fund Third Midfield Signing
Ugarte's departure would free up funds and a squad place, enabling manager Michael Carrick to pursue a third midfielder this window. Brazilian midfielder Ederson has already committed to a move to Old Trafford, and the club is chasing West Ham's Mateus Fernandes. According to reports, INEOS is willing to take a financial hit on Ugarte to facilitate further arrivals.
Rival's Opening Bid for Shea Charles Rejected
Leeds United have had a £20million proposal turned down for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles. The 22-year-old Northern Ireland international has been linked with Manchester United, but Leeds made the first formal approach.
The Athletic reports that the bid fell short of Southampton's asking price, though discussions between the two clubs continue. Manchester United, meanwhile, have yet to table an offer for Charles. United's director of football Jason Wilcox previously worked with Charles at Southampton, having helped secure his transfer from Manchester City in 2023.
Midfield Rebuild Key for Carrick's First Full Season
Manchester United are gearing up for a busy summer as Michael Carrick prepares for his first full campaign as manager. Following a third-place finish last season and a return to the Champions League, bolstering the midfield is a priority after Casemiro's departure.
In addition to Ederson and Fernandes, Southampton's Shea Charles and Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte (as a departure) are among the names shaping United's midfield strategy. If Ugarte leaves, the club is expected to pursue three midfield acquisitions in total.
