Manchester City are set to assess the impact of several loan moves that failed to go to plan, as new coach Enzo Maresca prepares to integrate returning youngsters into first-team training. Among those returning are Claudio Echeverri, Sverre Nypan, and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, all of whom struggled for game time at their respective clubs last season.
Loan Disappointments Mount
City sent a clutch of top young talent out on loan last season with the aim of preparing them for the first team. However, the results were largely disappointing. Echeverri, signed from River Plate, spent time at Bayer Leverkusen and Girona but saw limited action. Nypan, a highly rated Norwegian midfielder, was frozen out at his loan club, while Simpson-Pusey also failed to secure regular minutes. Vitor Reis and Divine Mukasa, meanwhile, suffered relegation with their temporary teams.
The club's previous loan strategy focused on stable, successful clubs playing a similar style to City's. Last season's struggles marked a departure from that model, with multiple managerial sackings and relegation battles affecting their loanees.
New Era Under Viana and Maresca
Hugo Viana, who replaced Txiki Begiristain as sporting director, has already introduced subtle changes to City's transfer approach. While the club has enjoyed successes, the loan market appears to be an area for improvement. Maresca, who took over as head coach, will now evaluate which of these players can contribute to the first team and which would benefit from another loan.
According to Simon Bajkowski, Chief Manchester City Writer, "City are about to find out just how much their loans from the last year have cost their squad or added to it."
Lessons Learned?
City previously preferred to keep top youngsters at the Etihad, as with Phil Foden, who developed under Pep Guardiola without a loan. The recent loan failures may prompt a rethink. Maresca will have the opportunity to work closely with the returning players in pre-season, assessing their readiness for the Premier League.
