New Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has been warned by club legend John Barnes against signing any players from his former club Bournemouth. Iraola, 44, spent three successful years with the Cherries, leading them to their first European qualification before joining Liverpool.
Iraola's Bournemouth Legacy
During his tenure at Bournemouth, the club's Premier League finishes improved annually despite losing key players each window. Last summer, three starting defenders were sold, followed by top scorer Antoine Semenyo's January move to Manchester City. However, talent remains at the Vitality Stadium, including in-demand midfielder Alex Scott, linked with both Liverpool and Manchester United.
Barnes Advises Against Raid
Speaking to Betfred, Barnes stated: "There's no Bournemouth player I'd like to see him bring to Anfield with him because I don't think there's a Bournemouth player who's better than what we already have." He added that Alex Scott's potential arrival would be solely due to the manager's trust, not necessarily a fit under a different coach.
Barnes's caution may be influenced by Milos Kerkez's mixed debut season at Anfield after a £40million move last summer. The left-back remains first choice following Andy Robertson's departure but has yet to fully convince.
First Signing and Transfer Targets
Iraola has already made one signing, bringing Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34million. The Reds also had an £86million bid for Yan Diomande rejected by RB Leipzig, with attack a priority. Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola remains a target.
Hughes Relationship Aids Negotiations
Sporting director Richard Hughes, who worked with Iraola at Bournemouth, has facilitated transfers. Iraola noted: "Obviously it helps a lot that on the other side of the table there is someone who you have already worked with." He emphasized Liverpool's appeal: "It's about the club, about Liverpool is what really attracted me."
Iraola is using the pre-season period to understand the club fully before training begins in a month.
