An 88-year-old American veteran was moved to tears after receiving a life-changing donation of $1.77 million from generous strangers, following years of financial hardship after his pension was wiped out.
A Lifetime of Service Followed by Financial Ruin
Ed Bambas, from Brighton, Michigan, served in the US Army and spent years working for General Motors, expecting a secure retirement when he left the company in 1999. His plans were shattered a decade later when the Detroit automaker filed for bankruptcy in 2009. Bambas was among nearly 20,000 employees of the Delphi Corporation, a GM subsidiary, who saw their retirement benefits and pensions disappear.
His situation became even more dire when his wife, Joan, fell seriously ill. Without health insurance to cover her medical expenses, Bambas was compelled to sell their family home. "With everyone's support in the room, I want to reveal that this is one of the largest individual fundraisers in GoFundMe history," Weidenhofer announced. "And if you want, you will be able to retire because we've raised you $1.77 million."
Bambas began sobbing in disbelief as the figure was read out, overcome with emotion before sharing a heartfelt hug with his benefactor. "Thank you," he managed to utter through his tears. Weidenhofer reassured him, "It feels fake, I know. But it's completely real." Bambas expressed immense gratitude, though he noted his profound wish that his late wife could have been there to share in the moment.
The campaign was initiated after 26-year-old Lexi Wallace, who knew Bambas from the grocery store, nominated him for help. "He deserves it, he earned it, it's all him," Wallace stated.
