DoorDash Driver Stands Firm Against Humiliating $3 Dance Demand
A DoorDash delivery driver has ignited a fierce online debate after publicly refusing a customer's request to perform the Macarena dance for a mere $3 tip. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, was shared on Reddit by the driver under the username OnyxLeigion_, quickly going viral with over 6,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments.
The Dehumanizing Delivery Instructions
The 30-year-old courier received explicit instructions via the DoorDash app: "Do the Macarena for 10 seconds for an extra $3 tip." Accompanying the post was a screenshot showing the demand, timed after midnight. The driver, delivering a McDonald's order to what he described as a wealthy neighborhood, immediately recognized the potential for humiliation.
"You can, in fact, keep your three dollars," the driver wrote in his Reddit post. "I don't need to be recorded and posted on the internet for three dollars." He completed the delivery without performing any dance moves, disappointing the group of teenagers who had made the request.
Teenagers' Reaction and Suspected Motives
According to the driver, the teenagers ran to their window and "threw a fit" when he declined their demand. "It was in a rich area with kids who apparently think that because I do DoorDash, I'm desperate for three dollars," he explained. After the delivery, the customers messaged him: "Aw we were gonna tip extra man."
The driver responded that he didn't need to appear on TikTok for $3, receiving no reply. He believed the teens intended to record him, hoping his humiliating dance would generate social media clout. "They had their phones in their hands," he observed. "Definitely looked like they were trying to do the whole 'I'm just casually holding my phone and it just happens to be pointing at you' thing."
Viral Backlash and Community Support
The Reddit post in the DoorDash drivers' forum sparked widespread outrage among fellow couriers. Comments flooded in, with one user stating: "Jesus, literally 'dance poor person dance.'" Another added: "These people think they're so funny, too. Like they're the life of every room they're in when really people try to leave the moment they walk in."
Many commenters criticized the request as exploitative: "Three bucks for you, but probably thousands of views and then getting paid on TikTok is a hard pass," wrote one. Another noted: "Some people really get off on humiliating others."
The Price of Dignity: What Would Make Drivers Dance?
While most supported the driver's refusal, some discussed what compensation might justify such a request:
- "I mean, for $10 I'll think about it, for $15 I'll really think about it. For $20, I might just do it."
- "I would have said I don't dance for less than $100."
- "I'll need at least $30 to become a dancing monkey."
A minority admitted they might perform for fun, which the original poster argued only encourages such behavior. "The way they acted when I didn't do it also makes me think other drivers have actually done it," he said. "Which is sad."
Professional Consequences and Rating Disputes
Following the incident, the driver received his first one-star review, which he believes directly resulted from his refusal to dance. "Got my first ever one-star rating," he reported. "Very sure it's from this because the only things they marked were friendliness and not following instructions."
He concluded with a call for change: "We really need to be able to dispute ratings, it's not my job to dance for children's amusement and I shouldn't be punished for refusing." The incident highlights broader issues about gig worker protections, tipping culture, and the boundaries of customer requests in the delivery economy.
