Aldi has announced a groundbreaking move in the UK retail sector, becoming the first supermarket to introduce a mandatory £13.50 hourly wage rule for store assistants, effective from Wednesday, April 1st. This significant pay adjustment marks the second wage increase for Aldi staff in 2026 alone, following an earlier announcement in January that also extended maternity benefits to 26 weeks at full pay.

Enhanced Pay Rates Across the UK

Under the new structure, store assistants working at Aldi branches across the UK will receive a base rate of £13.50 per hour. For those employed inside the M25 motorway area, the rate rises to £14.88 per hour. Additionally, pay scales increase further based on length of service, reaching £14.47 for general staff and £15.20 for London-based employees with longer tenure.

Investment in Workforce and Expansion

The German-owned supermarket chain estimates that this pay rise will positively impact approximately 28,000 hourly-paid employees nationwide. Combined with previous adjustments, Aldi is investing a total of £42 million in colleague wages throughout 2026. Giles Hurley, Chief Executive of Aldi UK and Ireland, emphasised the company's commitment, stating that colleagues deserve the highest pay in the sector for their dedication to delivering exceptional value.

Aldi employs over 45,000 staff members across the UK and continues an aggressive expansion strategy. The retailer plans to open 40 new stores in 2026 as part of a £370 million investment programme, alongside upgrading and extending existing locations. This initiative forms part of a broader two-year investment strategy worth £1.6 billion, unveiled last year, with a long-term goal of operating 1,500 stores in the UK.

Competitive Edge and Employee Benefits

Aldi claims that its new pay rates now exceed those of all rival supermarkets, including Lidl, Sainsbury's, and Waitrose, which have also announced shop-floor pay rises this year. Furthermore, Aldi highlights that it remains the only major supermarket offering paid breaks to all employees—a benefit valued at approximately £1,500 per year on average for store workers.

This comprehensive approach to employee compensation and benefits reinforces Aldi's position as one of Britain's fastest-growing food retailers, setting a new benchmark in the competitive supermarket landscape while boosting the livelihoods of thousands of workers.
