Admiral transfers roles to India amid UK redundancy process

Admiral has confirmed that some roles at risk of redundancy in its UK insurance business are being transferred to India.

Earlier this month Admiral, Wales’ only FTSE 100 company, announced it had entered into 45-day consultation with staff over plans to reduce its UK insurance business by around 5%.

It said the move was designed to improve operational efficiencies and reduce over-complexity. It stressed that its adoption was not the reason for the redundancies. When announcing strong financial results for 2025 back in March, Admiral announced it was implementing cost savings of £100m.

Details of the transfer

Admiral wouldn't give any figure on the number of roles that could be transferred to its Indian operations. However, it will only apply to a number of its departments.

A spokesman for Admiral said: “Admiral remains committed to its UK operations and the significant role they play in serving customers, developing talent and leading the business.

"As our business evolves, we continually review how work is organised across our locations to ensure we have the right capabilities in the right places. This includes continuing to develop capability in India, where we’ve had a long-established presence, alongside our existing UK teams.”

WalesOnline has seen a document sent to impacted staff in one Admiral department. On its India operations, the document, which stresses that no final decisions have been made as it has entered into consultation, says: “We are proposing to remove some roles in the UK and scale our Delhi operations.”

Restructuring plans

On the restructuring, the document, which refers to its plans as “Build to Win”, adds: “Build to Win is about intentionally creating UK Insurance’s future technology platform, including new platforms, products, data, AI and reusable technology capabilities that will progressively replace, consolidate or simplify elements of the core over time; creating future-state capabilities, rather than only focusing on optimising what we have today.

"Together, they are helping us build a simpler, faster and better UK insurance business.”

Admiral has two separate businesses in Delhi, both serving its UK operations. Customer-facing Admiral Solutions employs around 2,700 people. Its tech support sister operation, Admiral India, employs around 460.

Since establishing a presence in India 20 years ago, functions have flowed two-ways with the UK. Admiral also has businesses in Italy, France and Spain.

Financial performance and staff support

For its 2025 financial year Admiral reported a 16% surge in pre-tax profit to £957.9m. Group turnover came in at £5.9bn, down 1% on 2024. On the back of the results, some 13,000 staff received £1,800 in free shares.

Admiral said it was too early to say whether the reduction in staff could be achieved voluntarily or whether there could be compulsory redundancies. It said it will be offering enhanced redundancy packages to impacted staff and a series of other support measures, including up to £10,000 for those deciding to start their own businesses, alongside mentoring support.

Other support measures that will be offered to staff include up to £5,000 for professional qualifications, accredited training and further education. Staff undertaking approved retraining can apply to work part-time for up to 12 months while gaining new qualifications or developing skills for a new profession.

It is also working with specialist outplacement partner LHH to provide career coaching, job search support, CV and interview preparation, networking guidance and career transition expertise.

Admiral’s UK business has a workforce of nearly 10,000, of which 6,700 are based in Cardiff and just under 2,000 at its Swansea office. It also has a presence in Peterborough following its acquisition of insurer More Than.
