A nationwide survey has revealed the UK's most popular sandwiches by region, creating a fascinating 'sandwich map' that champions everything from traditional cheese and tomato to fashionable banh mi and Korean fried chicken rolls.
Regional Sandwich Capitals
Stoke-on-Trent has officially claimed the title of Britain's Tuna Mayo Capital, with 14 per cent of residents selecting tuna mayo as their go-to sandwich, the highest proportion recorded anywhere across the UK for this classic filling.
Bristol has emerged as the nation's biggest enthusiasts of pulled pork rolls, with an impressive 44 per cent choosing the meaty option as their number one. Glasgow demonstrated increasingly adventurous Scottish palates, with 36 per cent naming Korean fried chicken rolls as their favourite, while Plymouth locals showed a preference for hoisin duck wraps at 33 per cent.
Cambridge residents favoured the timeless mozzarella and tomato combination (33 per cent), and 21 per cent of Mancunians plumped for smoked salmon and cream cheese. Oxford demonstrated refined tastes by favouring crayfish and rocket sandwiches (20 per cent).
Norwich was crowned the Falafel and Houmous Wrap Capital of the UK after 18 per cent named it their top choice. Cardiff residents packed a punch by opting for New York pastrami sandwiches (14 per cent), while Newcastle upon Tyne proved to be the UK's greatest enthusiasts of Vietnamese banh mi (12 per cent).
In Edinburgh, 14 per cent selected coronation chicken as their ultimate sandwich, showing devotion to a royal favourite. Londoners gravitated towards chicken salad sandwiches (12 per cent), while Liverpool residents plumped for roast beef and mustard (10 per cent), according to a poll of 2,000 commissioned by Coca-Cola Zero Sugar.
Leicester stayed true to a lunchbox classic, with cheese and tomato reigning supreme among nine per cent of locals.
Brits' Sandwich Habits
On average, Brits tuck into sandwiches four times a week, with more than half (54 per cent) agreeing that sandwiches are a cornerstone of British cuisine. One in five (23 per cent) go even further, claiming that a disappointing sandwich has the power to ruin their entire day.
The survey also revealed that a fizzy drink (52 per cent) is the ultimate sandwich companion, followed by water (35 per cent) and an energy drink (32 per cent). Seventeen per cent enjoy a cuppa alongside their sarnie, while 18 per cent always reach for a cup of coffee.
TV and radio personality Jordan North has joined forces with Coca-Cola Zero Sugar to launch The Coke Sandwich Society, a fresh initiative aimed at reuniting people over Britain's most beloved meal. He says, 'I've always been a massive fan of a good sarnie. It's about taking a break, having a laugh, and properly enjoying your food with your mates. My Northern ham and coleslaw sandwich is an absolute belter.'
