Express reporter Jennifer Pinto conducted a blind taste test comparing ready salted crisps from six supermarket own brands against the market leader Walkers. The results revealed that the cheapest option, Sainsbury's at 85p per six-pack, outperformed all competitors with a near-perfect score of 9.5 out of 10.
The Taste Test Methodology
Pinto evaluated each crisp brand on five criteria: taste, crunch, salt seasoning, texture and value for money. The crisps were tested in a single session to ensure consistent conditions. Brands included Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, M&S and Walkers.
Waitrose Essential Ready Salted Multipack (5/10)
Priced at £1.20, Waitrose's offering was a disappointment. The bag contained mostly broken and crumbly pieces, lacking the satisfying crunch expected. The flavour was bland, with insufficient potato taste and unbalanced seasoning. Pinto rated it 5 out of 10.
Morrisons Ready Salted Flavour Crisps (5.5/10)
At £1.10, Morrisons crisps started with a good crunch but were overly salty. A lingering artificial aftertaste detracted from the experience, and the thicker cut was not preferred. Rating: 5.5/10.
M&S Ready Salted Crisps (6/10)
The most expensive at £1.80 for a 150g sharing bag, M&S crisps were pale and bland. Despite a pleasant crunch, they lacked earthy potato flavour. Pinto noted they were not bad but overpriced. Rating: 6/10.
Lidl Ready Salted Crisps (7/10)
At just 85p, Lidl crisps had a satisfying crunch but needed more seasoning and potato flavour. Some crisps were slightly overcooked, causing texture inconsistency. Rating: 7/10.
Aldi Snackrite Ready Salted Crisps (7.5/10)
Also 85p, Aldi crisps impressed with good flavour and crunch. However, many were broken into small pieces, and they became too salty after several. Excellent value nonetheless. Rating: 7.5/10.
Walkers Ready Salted Crisps (9/10)
The benchmark at £1.50, Walkers delivered large, golden, whole crisps with perfect crunch and salt balance. A pleasant aftertaste made them highly moreish. Rating: 9/10.
Sainsbury's Ready Salted Multipack (9.5/10)
The winner at 85p, Sainsbury's crisps excelled in all categories: great crunch, generous but not overpowering seasoning, and authentic potato flavour. They offered the best value and taste combination. Rating: 9.5/10.
Pinto concluded that while Walkers remains a strong contender, Sainsbury's own brand provides an unbeatable combination of quality and affordability, making it the top choice for football watch parties and everyday snacking.
