Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has declared that 2026 will be the year Britain "turns a corner", with households finally beginning to feel an improvement in their personal finances.
Focus on Day-to-Day Priorities
Speaking at a community centre in Reading on Monday 5 January 2026, the Labour leader acknowledged global tensions, including a recent US operation in Venezuela, but stressed that the domestic cost of living remains the paramount concern for millions. He told residents in the Emmer Green area that his government's central mission is easing financial pressures.
"I always remind myself that for you and millions of people across this country, what matters more than anything is the cost of living," Sir Keir stated.
Pledges on Rail, Energy, and Childcare
In a bid to demonstrate tangible progress, the Prime Minister outlined key policies his administration has delivered. He highlighted that Labour had frozen rail fares for the first time in three decades and had taken £150 off the average annual energy bill.
He also pointed to the expansion of free childcare provision, a policy which drew applause from the audience at the Reading event.
A Shift in Political Messaging
This focused emphasis on the cost of living and delivered policies marks a deliberate shift in strategy from Downing Street. With Labour facing declining poll numbers, the approach is now to talk up existing achievements rather than rely on new announcements.
"2026 is the year that we’re going to be turning a corner where – when we say we want national renewal of the country, and we do – it becomes a reality, and people begin to feel the difference in their pockets, in the ability to pay the bill," Sir Keir vowed to the gathered residents.
Following his speech, the Prime Minister engaged with locals, including a child who had drawn a picture of him, and watched a group of children playing table football, humorously reminding them of the classic rule: "No spinning."
