Spencer Matthews, the former Made In Chelsea star, has embarked on what he describes as a "really dangerous" 24-hour challenge. The 37-year-old entrepreneur is no stranger to extreme endurance events, having previously completed 30 marathons in 30 days and a full Ironman triathlon. Now, he is attempting a 92-kilometre route across Mount Snowdon in Wales, a feat never attempted before, with an elevation gain greater than that of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Accompanied by the same team that helped him accomplish Project 7—seven triathlons on seven continents—Matthews will tackle six ascents of Snowdon, including a steep and technical fourth ascent. He stated: "This is the toughest challenge I have attempted in the UK. Covering more than two marathons and tackling more elevation than Mount Kilimanjaro in 24 hours is going to be absolutely brutal – a very serious physical and mental test."
Satellite Connectivity Crucial for Safety
Matthews emphasised the importance of staying connected during the challenge, particularly in remote mountain environments. He is using O2's new satellite connectivity service to access his route, weather updates, and communicate with his team. "It has the potential to be the hardest day that I’ve had in endurance. This has the potential to be really dangerous," he said. "The fourth ascent is steep and quite technical. You just wouldn’t attempt something like that without satellite connection."
Speaking to The Sun, Matthews added: "It’s easy to slip and break your leg if you can’t communicate with people at your base. Or even if they’re just 2-3km away on either side, it causes a lot of confusion and could be really problematic. So I feel in very good hands with that service."
Family Reactions and Future Plans
Matthews, who is married to fellow reality star Vogue Williams, revealed that his wife was not pleased with his previous challenges. After one event, she asked if he would ever do anything like that again. He replied: "Well, I'd love to do something like this every year for the next ten years." His mother also expressed disapproval. Despite the risks, Matthews feels "pretty confident" about completing the challenge.
The couple recently announced they are expecting their fourth child. They already have Theodore, Gigi, and Otto. Vogue shared the news on social media with a photo of the pair on a beach in St Barts, captioned: "BABY NUMBER 4 INCOMING."
Matthews currently holds three Guinness World Records for his endurance efforts. The challenge with O2 Satellite aims to demonstrate the reliability of satellite connectivity in remote areas, ensuring safety during extreme activities.
