During Tuesday's parliamentary session, Chancellor Reeves acknowledged that pump prices remain "very volatile at the moment" but resisted mounting pressure to reverse her planned fuel duty increase scheduled for September. She emphasized that current petrol prices remain 8p per litre lower than they would have been under previous Conservative government plans, with this gap expected to widen to 11p per litre by April.

Fuel duty has remained frozen since 2011, with a temporary 5p reduction implemented in 2022 in response to Russia's assault on Ukraine. In her Budget announcement last year, Ms. Reeves confirmed that this 5p cut would be gradually unwound between September 2024 and March 2027. The Chancellor stressed that her government would continue monitoring the situation closely while prioritizing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate Middle East conflicts as the most effective way to address cost-of-living challenges.

Reform UK's Alternative Vision for Fuel Pricing

Meanwhile, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has unveiled his party's competing approach to fuel pricing during a campaign event in Derbyshire. At a Newhaven forecourt where price boards featured Reform branding including "Reform Refuel" and "25p off with Farage," the party offered subsidized fuel prices of £1.43 per litre for diesel and £1.21 per litre for unleaded petrol.

Chancellor Reeves announced she would be meeting with petrol retailers later this week to address concerns about pricing discrepancies and work toward reducing costs for consumers. She highlighted the government's newly launched cheaper fuel finder scheme, which reveals significant price variations across the country, with some retailers charging nearly 180p per litre while others offer prices below 130p per litre.
