Marcus Rashford has sent a glowing message to Bruno Fernandes that underscores the Manchester United captain's impact. Fernandes equaled the Premier League assist record during United's victory over Nottingham Forest, reaching 20 assists for the season. Rashford quickly responded to Fernandes' Instagram post marking the milestone, commenting: "Setting levels as always [red heart emoji]." Fernandes replied: "@marcusrashford my brother [red heart emoji]."
Rashford's comment is telling of Fernandes' character. The Portuguese star needs just one assist in the final match against Brighton to surpass the record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Hours after Fernandes' display at Old Trafford, Rashford was an unused substitute for Barcelona in their final La Liga fixture against Real Betis at the Camp Nou. Fernandes had previously praised Rashford after he scored a stunning free-kick that secured the Spanish league title for Barcelona.
Rashford, 28, appears determined to extend his stay at Barcelona beyond his loan spell. Reports from Spain via Mundo Deportivo claim he has already agreed to a three-year deal with reduced wages. However, with talks stalling, Rashford is reportedly prepared to sign a five-year contract to help Barcelona finance the acquisition by spreading the cost.
A £26.2 million buy-option clause was included in his loan move, with Manchester United insisting on a sale for no less than that figure or Rashford staying. Michael Carrick, poised to become United's permanent head coach, is open to Rashford's return, but the player does not seem keen despite Ruben Amorim's departure.
Regardless of his situation, a momentous summer lies ahead at Old Trafford. United have secured Champions League football for next season. Their first departure was Rasmus Hojlund, who joined Napoli for £38 million after a clause was triggered by his loan club qualifying for the Champions League.
With Rashford expected to follow Hojlund out, United may bolster their attacking options, but strengthening midfield is the priority. Casemiro played his final home match against Nottingham Forest, with prime target Elliot Anderson impressing despite defeat. Other midfield targets include Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, Ederson, Aurelien Tchouameni, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes.
