Collectors are being advised to scrutinise their change for a rare 50p coin that could be worth hundreds of pounds. The 2009 Kew Gardens 50p, issued to mark the 250th anniversary of the famous botanical gardens, has a mintage of just 210,000, making it one of the scarcest coins in circulation.
Though surpassed in rarity by the 2023 Atlantic Salmon 50p (mintage 200,000), the Kew Gardens coin remains highly sought after. According to The Coin Collector UK, a TikTok account with over 227,000 followers, the coin can fetch between £120 and £150. The account's caption noted: 'The Kew Gardens is the most valuable 50p coin in circulation... its desirability yields a value of £130+.'
The coin's design features the Great Pagoda with a vine and the word 'Kew' at the base, alongside the dates '1759' and '2009'. On the obverse, the neck of Queen Elizabeth II should align with the 'P' in 'Pence' – a key detail to check for authenticity. Experts warn of numerous fakes, advising collectors to look for signs of wear on circulated coins; polished or mirror-like finishes (unless proof) may indicate a forgery.
