A general strike in Portugal, scheduled for 3 June, is expected to cause significant disruption, affecting approximately 500 flights and public transport services across the country. The walkout, organized by multiple trade unions under the umbrella of Portugal's largest union confederation, CGTP, is a protest against the government's proposed labour reforms.
Flight Disruptions and Airline Responses
The strike will involve cabin crew members of the SNPVAC union, whose president, Ricardo Penarróias, told local media that around 500 flights are likely to be cancelled. The affected airlines include Portugal's flag carrier, Tap Air, as well as easyJet and Ryanair. However, Ryanair has stated that it does not anticipate any disruption and plans to operate normally. Tap Air is offering flexibility to passengers holding tickets issued on 20 May for flights on 3 June, allowing them to reschedule without additional charges between 27 May and 11 June, either through its website or travel agents.
Public Transport Impact
Transport union FECTRANS has also joined the strike, meaning public transport services will be affected. This includes workers from the Lisbon Metro, Porto Metro, commuter rail Fertagus, and other systems. However, a union representing pilots has decided not to participate in the strike. Workers from other sectors, such as health and education, have also announced their involvement in the upcoming strike.
The labour reforms being protested would make it easier for companies to dismiss employees and remove caps on outsourcing, according to unions. The Independent has contacted easyJet for comment.
