Cameron Norrie, the British No 1, has retired from his first-round match at the French Open, marking another significant injury setback for British tennis. The 20th seed was trailing Paraguay's Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 7-6 (7-2), 2-0 when he decided to withdraw, having struggled with a pre-existing rib injury that had been troubling him throughout the contest.
Pre-Tournament Concerns
Norrie had revealed the rib issue on the eve of Roland Garros, following an exhaustive five-hour practice session against fifth seed Ben Shelton. Despite being known as one of the most resilient competitors in the sport, the combination of the rib injury and a recurring knee problem proved too much to overcome.
Impact on British Tennis
Norrie's retirement is the latest in a series of injury blows for British tennis. Jack Draper has missed the entire clay-court season due to a knee injury, while Emma Raducanu has been sidelined for extended periods with post-viral symptoms. Raducanu recently returned to action but suffered a first-round defeat to Solana Sierra. Additionally, Sonay Kartal is currently out of action.
The match saw Norrie lose the first set in a tiebreak before deciding he could not continue while trailing 2-0 in the second set. Vallejo, ranked world No 70, will now face history-making 17-year-old Moise Kouame in the next round.
More updates to follow as the tournament progresses.
