Jose Mourinho has firmly dismissed speculation linking him with a return to Real Madrid, insisting that Benfica's Champions League qualification will not influence his future. The 63-year-old Portuguese manager is widely reported to be the leading candidate to replace Alvaro Arbeloa at the Bernabeu, following a challenging season for the Spanish giants.
Mourinho's Stance on Real Madrid Links
Speaking at his post-match press conference after Benfica's 1-1 draw with Braga on Monday evening, Mourinho stated: "You're talking about Real Madrid, I'm not talking about Real Madrid. I'm talking about Benfica, and the work we've been doing won't change because we're second or third. That's not what's going to influence my future."
Mourinho took over at Benfica in September and has led the team on an unbeaten run in the Portuguese league, with only one match remaining. However, the draw with Braga left his side two points behind second-placed Sporting Lisbon, ahead of Saturday's crucial clash with Estoril.
Champions League Ambitions
"Obviously, Benfica wants to play in the Champions League, and so do I as a coach, but it has no influence whatsoever," Mourinho added. The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey.
Real Madrid's Turbulent Season
Real Madrid's current campaign has been fraught with difficulties, culminating in a 3-0 defeat to Barcelona on Sunday evening, which handed the league title to their fierce rivals. The loss was accompanied by widely publicised dressing-room unrest. Additionally, Los Blancos were eliminated from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage for the second consecutive season, losing 6-4 on aggregate to Bayern Munich after being knocked out by Arsenal last term.
The 15-time European Cup winners are set to finish the season without a trophy, and the club is expected to appoint a new manager this summer. Mourinho remains well-regarded by president Florentino Perez, more than a decade after he left the club to rejoin Chelsea.
