Midland Skip Hire Enters Liquidation After 24 Years

A long-established skip hire company that served communities across the East Midlands for nearly a quarter of a century has been forced into liquidation, resulting in significant job losses. Midland Skip Hire Limited, which operated from Bottesford near Bingham in Nottinghamshire, has ceased trading after 24 years in business following a winding-up order initiated by HM Revenue and Customs.

Court-Approved Closure and Financial Struggles

The High Court approved the closure of the waste management and skip rental business, which was originally founded back in 2002. Commissioners for HMRC had filed the petition to shut down the company and sell its assets back in November of last year. The firm is currently under the control of a receiver, with the Government's Insolvency Service now assisting former employees to claim redundancy payments.

Financial Accounts Reveal Significant Liabilities

Midland Skip Hire's most recent financial accounts, filed last summer for the year ending June 30, 2024, revealed the company had £3,079,867 in fixed assets. However, the documents also indicated the business faced substantial financial pressures, needing to pay significant amounts to creditors in the coming years. This financial strain ultimately contributed to the company's inability to continue operations.

Impact on Employees and Local Community

Documents submitted to Companies House showed that the firm had an average of 40 employees in 2024, up from 36 in 2023. While the exact number of staff made redundant remains unclear, Nottinghamshire Live reports that multiple positions have been lost as a direct result of the liquidation. The company had established itself as a family-run business serving both residential and commercial customers across Bingham, Newark, Grantham and surrounding areas.

Company's Legacy and Service Area

Midland Skip Hire had positioned itself as "one of the East Midlands' premier skip hire companies" with a history of operating throughout Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. The company's website, which remains online despite the liquidation, states: "We provide a high quality service to both residential and commercial customers at competitive prices, offering a great range of waste management services." The firm emphasized its family-run ethos and convenient location near the A52, which made their services accessible to customers throughout the region.

The liquidation marks the end of a business that had become a fixture in the local waste management sector, having served the community since the early 2000s. The winding-up process will now see the company's assets sold to repay creditors, while former employees navigate the redundancy claims process with government assistance.
