Manchester United moved within touching distance of Champions League qualification after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday evening. Goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko in the first half proved decisive, despite a late strike from Mathias Jensen that set up a tense finale.
First-half dominance
Michael Carrick's side started with the sharpness that had been missing in their recent home defeat to Leeds. Kobbie Mainoo showcased incredible balance and footwork in the opening minutes, setting up Amad Diallo, whose shot was blocked on the line by Sepp van den Berg. Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher then clawed away a thumping header from Harry Maguire from a Bruno Fernandes cross.
The breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Fernandes' deep corner was headed back across goal by Maguire to the back post, where Casemiro displayed strength and determination to nod home. The Brazilian, who is leaving at the end of his contract this summer, kissed the club badge as fans urged him to stay another year.
Brentford fight back
Brentford responded strongly, with Senne Lammens denying Michael Kayode before Igor Thiago threatened to equalise. The Brazilian striker missed a clear chance, and Ayden Heaven prevented him from getting a shot away. Lammens' fine reactions then stopped an unfortunate own goal from Heaven, who had bundled a cross with his arm.
United capitalised on Brentford's lack of a cutting edge in the 43rd minute. A powerful challenge from Amad started a counter-attack, with Fernandes taking the ball over the halfway line before passing for Sesko to score with composure, making it 2-0.
Second-half pressure
United switched to a back three at half-time to stifle Brentford's attacks. Maguire was denied by Kelleher early in the second half. Dango Ouattara looked most likely to break through, hitting the post with a header from a corner before play was halted for a high boot as he attempted an acrobatic follow-up.
Casemiro, named man of the match, sent a low long-range effort narrowly wide before Brentford pulled one back. With three minutes remaining, Jensen capitalised on tired defending, cutting inside and firing a piledriver past Lammens. Mikkel Damsgaard then headed a wonderful chance straight at Lammens, but United held on for a crucial win.
Champions League charge
The victory gives United an 11-point lead over sixth-placed Brighton with just four matches to play, strengthening their grip on third place. Fernandes, who set up his 19th assist of the campaign, is now just one shy of the Premier League record of 20 assists in a single season, shared by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry. United's return to the Champions League looks increasingly certain as Carrick's side continue their impressive run.
